350 Swap?
« on: Apr 15, 2007, 02:51:58 PM »
A friend of mine got me interested in this and I'm trying to find out more info.
I've googled a bit and haven't turned up much. I'm also searching though the various sites.

I want to put a carb'd 350 in my 82, so if anyone has any links and info, please share!

and are looking for what? your going to need an upgraded radiator, custom headers to clear, engine mounts, some way to connect the engine to the rest of the drivetrain like an adapter, our use the drivetrain from the 350.... a lot of people on here have done it, maybe not a lot, but it is a swap that isnt unheard of.... nwor has kits that should help out

NWOR and Downey sell most the parts. I've decided on what parts I need.
I will be fabbing trans mounts, skid plats, exhaust, etc by myself. Save a lil cash.

When I do this I'll also do my dual cases (stock gears in the front case and 4.7s in the back). This coupled with the NV4500 first gear of 6.32:1 will give me a crawl ratio of 358.3:1

So I started looking more into parts, here's what I've decided so far.
For starters, NO BODY LIFT. I do not like them and I refuse to run one. Sawzall and a BFH are my friends for making the room I need. I won't do a hack job either.
- Mount Mounts, I'm going to go with the ones from Downey Off Road. They are bolt and let me position the engine how I want.
- Radiator, Downey again. There 2 core aluminum version. Plus the over flow tank.
- Power Steering, Northwest Off Road's kit will be used as it will allow me to use my stock Toyota pump.
- Oil Pan, NWOR again. Their's will allow for more clearance.
- Starter, NWOR again. They say you need a body lift. I say I don't
- NV4500 with 6.32:1 first gear.
- T-case to tranny adapter, Advance Adapters.
- 4340 Chromo 23 spline t-case outputs from Bobby Long.
- Headers, Advance Adapters.

I still need to figure out what wiring is involved with the swap (not much I imagine).
Anyone who can help, that would be great.

if its a carbed 350, you are only going to have to deal with an alternator, and an ignition system

without a body lift u will most likely have to cut the hood for aircleaner clearance and cut firewall for the gay chevy distributor and cut a larger tunnel for the trans and transfercase... i have a 4.6L modular ford in a 2wd and i did a 3"body lift and i barely had enough room for the trans and i used the stock toy rad. and it cools fine i ran it to florida in traffic for 1300 miles straight with no problem. i thought about doing a 302 to my 89 4x4

I'll run an e-fan for sure.
I don't mind cutting the trans tunnel as it means I can tuck everything up and make a flat belly on the truck.
As for the air cleaner, that's something I will have to tackle.

I did the swap a few years ago. I run NWOR mounts they have like an adjustable mount option thats slides if they are still the same. If you don't use a body lift you'll be hard pressed for air cleaner clearence but it could be done. You should use a distributor with a external coil because it's smaller and you could put the motor furthur back. also you could use a short water pump from an older corvette if i remember right. which is an inch shorter than standard water pump. i ran my raditor up front and used an old radiator from a nova or chevy 2 i can't remember. it cooled fine. now my radiator is in back with a stock blazer radiator and taurus fan

why carb? why not tbi? howell makes a sweet harness that plugs into everything. its a stand alone system... super easy to put in. I'm puting this set up in my buggy. lee the t-case installer here at the shop did this set up with a 4.3 and it looks really clean. he used his stock plugs for all of his lights and the howell kit to make it live.

I just don't want to deal with wiring of a TBI set up.
My 82 doesn't take much to run and when I do this I'll be ditching as much of the harness as possible.
Carb'd 350 only needs alt, ignition and starter wiring.

I think wiring the TBI is a little more complicated.

to be honest with you lee said that it took him less then a day to make it run. the howell harness takes away all of the headache to it.

i agree with the howell kit. I'll be running that when i convert mine to fuel injection. right now i'm running a truck avenger and haven't had any problems. I been on my side and it hasn't sputter hardly at all. but i definately want to convert mine

I agree with these guys Tony, the Howell harness is just way to freakin easy to do. Besides, if you went TBI you'd have all the benifits of fuel injection. I've seen a couple of folks really have some issues with carbs on the trail. By the way, the Howell harness is what I used for my 83.
