v6 vs 4cyl differential carrier identification
« on: Apr 15, 2007, 10:59:55 AM »
I bought what was labeled as a TRD V6 LSD for my (V6) truck well over a year ago. I've found that the TRD units have the logo stamped on them. The unit I bought does not. The only writing on it are the numbers "77" and a symbol which sort of looks like 2 triangles.

So after internet hunting I found the Precision gear Power Brute (http://www.precisiongear.com/powerbrute.htm) in a model "LOM77" and the picture on their website looks to be the exact same design as mine. I believe this is what I have. But they also have a "LOM77-2" which is for the V6 diffs, so I think I have the 4cyl version. I will be calling Precision gear on Monday to see if they can help me identify it.

My questions are:
1) As I understand the V6 and the 4cyl carriers are NOT interchangeable, correct?

2) What are the identifiable differences between the 2 carrier types?

3) Is anyone familiar with these Precicion gear LSD's, any input?

and 4) if this is the 4cyl version, it is useless to me, so does anyone want to buy it?  ;)

Thanks in advance for any input!
Nick.

Not really useless...none of the questions really need a picture.

There is a guy on ebay which has 2 Truetracs offered, one with a 45mm "hub" and one with a 50mm (V6 in the description as well). I measured the OD of the shaft input (hub??) and it was dead on 45mm, so I'm guessing the one I have is for the 4cyl.  :rivers:

Here's some pics of what I've got.

v6  and 4cyl 3rd members  will interchange,   putting 4 cylgears in a v6 3rd  is a bit  confusing but "can" be done

Gee, that's incredibly helpful! So you don't know the answers to the questions then.

Thanks, but I'm not looking to swap gears...As it states above, I'm interested in knowing the physical differences between v6 and 4cyl CARRIERS. What makes them non-interchangeable.

it  can be done   ,  i think,  if you use v6 bearings  and press them  onto the  LSD  then  it might work

the  gears  will  fit,  no worries there

i have  stock 79 4 cyl gears in my elocker

Still wondering..... Someone here must know the physical differences between a v6 and 4cyl carrier (lsd, locker, spool, whatever).

Since you're too lazy to do any research I'll help you. The V6 carrier has a 4 pinion carrier, bigger bearings and the 3rd has an extra rib cast into it. You can use a 4 cylinder carrier in a V6 3rd with the correct bearing but you cannot use a V6 carrier in a 4 cylinder 3rd. Does that help??

Too lazy to do any research???? I've searched plenty, Can I not ask a question? jeeez.

So to use a 4cyl carrier in my v6 3rd I just need the correct bearing? The main carrier bearings which hold it in the 3rd, right? Bearings with the inner race of the 4cyl carrier and the outer race of the v6 housing? Where can I buy these?

Thanks.

Nick.

Thanks...but those bearings are for the 4cyl 3rd, I have the v6.

Anyone else?
Can someone verify the size difference between the 2 carriers? 45 mm vs 50mm on the carrier side of the bearing? I sure would love to know which carrier I have before I buy bearings.

Thanks......
