94 4-Runner SAS buildup
« on: Feb 26, 2007, 11:27:48 PM »
I figured as much time as I was spending on this forum I should post my build up info here too. Here's the story.

I bought this rig bone stock back in 2000 in England while I was stationed there. I immediately started modding it and was able to wheel it in England, Ireland, Wales, and Scotland while I was over there. It came over on a boat in Sept of 03 and I picked it up in Tacoma, WA and continued doing stuff to it. In Sept of this year I picked up a new Tacoma so the Runner is no longer my DD. After looking at it sitting in the driveway for a couple months I decided it was time to start cutting it up and making a wheeler out of it. I found a guy that had a couple of good already built axles that were almost new who had decided to go Dana's so I snatched up his axles and got started. The guy I bought the axles from is actually doing the Fab work but I will be doing everything else. On to the pics....

Front Axle:
-Housing trussed, plated steering stops, shaved drain plug, diff armor
-30-Spline Liongfield Chromo Axles
-Chromo Hub gears
-Fresh Rebuild
-FJ Rotors and ifs brakes
-Marlin Crawler High Steer Kit
-Backing plate eliminators
-Rock Ring Felt protectors
-Marlin Crawler 4cyl Diff w/ Yukon 5.29's and a Detroit Locker
-Triple Drilled Flange
-Solid Pinion Spacer
-Upgraded Steering Studs-Fully Rebuilt w/ new bearings throughout
-14" Bilstein 5150 shocks
-Trail Gear 4" springs and Swap parts

Rear Axle:
Diff Armor
Shaved Drain Plug
Yukon 5.29's
Detroit
Trail Gear 5" springs
12" Bilstein 5150's

Armor
Stubbs Welding Sliders
Marlin rear tube bumper
Davez offroad front tube bumper
Dual Case Crossmember guard

Marlin Ultimate Crawler w/ 4.70's and 2.28 gears

37X12.5X15 Goodyear MTR's

Warn XD9000i

Here's a shot if her right after I got it back in 2000.

And here's a shot when it was still my DD before the cutting began. It had a 2" BL and 33's with 4.88's and open diffs.

Now let the real modding begin. First task was to ditch those chrome bumpers

Heres a shot of the Marlin rear bumper

Davez Offroad Performance front bumper

37X12.5X15 MT/Rs

Marlin Ultimate Crawler

Loaded up and headed for the shop

And so it starts... no going back now!!

SO LONG IFS!!!!

Frame prepped

Spring hanger welded on

Sitting on it's own weight for the first time

Couldn't resist any longer... we threw a tire on it real quick for a couple poser shots. This is a 37.. I dont think clearance is going to be an issue.... :D

The front is now done and the rear is getting pretty close These are my old 33's on there for a quick height comparison. This pic was shot while it was out of the garage to turn it around and start on the rear.

Back in the garage to hack the coil crap out from underneath it.

Rear spring hanger

Still have to get my rear third set up this week, the drivelines made, and my the linkages to the crawl box and then it'll just be finish work after that. Stay tuned for updates.

Thanks your the first person that has known what it is. That thing is a kick in the ass. It's like a 3 dimensional ATV. I do 90% of my flying withing 20 feet of the ground. At 25 mph you can fly down ditches, chase coyotes, drag your feet through a wheat field...ect.. it's a ton of fun. Here is a link to a vid of it in action http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VmD_kutaSnw

Yeah man my old man wants to get one, we have three or four of those flying around my house during the summer.  Kinda the same idea but without the motor, paragliding, looks fun but i still think those guys are crazy, wrong updraft or dust devil and it's all over.  It's still cool man, good luck and nice runner

Well now that I got my coupler we can press on with the dual cases. I'm picking up my third on Friday and hopefully the drivelines will be done in the next few days also. I'll get some more pictures as soon as we get it driveable and out of the shop. After that stuff the only thing left will be to weld in the bumpstop extensions and hoops once we flex it some.

might want to weld a side exit exhaust pipe in there...don't want that hot exhaust on your shocks

ya it's not done yet. That pipe actually clamps onto the rear of the muffler so I am just gonna take it off and have a piece bent up at muffler shop somewhere. Probably dump it out right behind the tire somewhere where it wont' get crushed. That was a $500 Borla stainless steel catback once upon a time.

Well things been slow on my build. Found out the input shaft on my ready to run box I bought was out of spec. Had to send it back. It was supposed to be back on Friday but didn't make it. I'm also having issues getting my rear third set up. Somehow I ended up with a 4cyl detroit packaged in a 6cyl box. Once I get these two issues sorted it should go together quick. I thought things were going way to smoothly.
