22R to 22RE the 84' gets a transplant
« on: Feb 26, 2007, 07:48:37 PM »
To make a long story short, I got a smoking deal on a 94 4x4 truck.  $400.00 for a complete truck, that had been rolled.  I have an 84 4x4 truck and I hate carbs.  Let the swap begin.

The 94 will be stripped to the frame.  The parts that will be used on the 84 are the following:  22re engine
               complete engine wiring harness
               airflow meter
               ignitor and coil
               ECM
               starter relay
               circuit opening relay
               EFI relay
               EFI fuel tank

I did the same swap in an 84 4Runner with a 22RE from an 85.  I had to rebuild it first and then transfer all the EFI stuff over.  Let me know if you have any questions!

Time to take some stuff apart.  First I need to get the dash out of the 94, to get at that wiring harness.  What is nice about the late model 22re is that the engine wiring harness is almost stand aloan.  The engine harness has 5 plugs.  Three of the plugs go  to the ECM, the other two go to other wiring harnesses.  The grey plug is the only plug I will need.  I am going to use mechanical guages. The grey plug wiring harness goes to the engine fuse pannel, fuel pump, and ignition.  I will list the wires I keep out off this harness later in the post.

The next items on the list are the EFI relay, starter relay, and circuit opening relay.
Remove the EFI relay (black) and starter relay (purple) in the engine fuse pannel. The circuit opening relay is under the dash on the passenger side, above the heater blower.  This is the location I will mount the EFI and starter relay.

Time to start cutting wires....   The wire colors for the starter relay are: blk, blk/red, and blk/wht.  These wires are located in the grey plug harness that goes between the eng. harn. and the eng. fuse pannel.  I cut the wires long  enough to mount it under the dash.

The wire colors for the EFI relay are blk/grn, wht/red, wht/blk, and blk/yel.  These wires are in the same harness as the wires for the starter relay.  I cut the wires long enough to mount them under the dash.  Gittinit not sure what way I'm going to go.  I really like the 4runner and I like flatbed trail trucks.  For now, I'm just doing the motor swap on the truck.  What would you do?

Here is a pic of the harness with the 3 relays need for the swap and the grey plug.  More wires will be cut out later.

A pure trail rig of course, thats what i did and would gladly do it again. Next time around I'm gonna have four seats though so the whole family can tag along.

I mounted the 94 tank and the EFI supply hardline in the 84.  Direct bolt in except the hard line.  I also got the motor and trans installed.  The 84 is also going to get OBA.  I have a york compressor sitting around, so I made some brackets.  I'm not ready to give up AC in the 85 4runner yet.

I thought about making the truck a trail rig only.  I don't think I would like to DD the truck...no AC.
