No turn signals or hazards
« on: Nov 29, 2006, 05:28:55 PM »
I am having some electrical issues. Neither my turn signals or flashers work. I put LED's up front for turn signals and when I did I put in a new flasher box. When I did this the flashers worked but no hazards which wasn't right but drivable. Now I have neither and when I turn on the headlights the turn signals/flashers stay on all the time. If the headlights are off they come on when I hit the brake pedal. And sometimes when I turn left? It has got me stumped. I kind of think it is in the turn signal switch but not sure and I can't even find one to try. Anybody have any ideas??

I am thinking of trying regular lights up front? I didn't change the wiring at all, just installed led lights instead of standard lights in front and replaced the flasher.

I think there is another thread about this. Big Mike has done something to correct this I think or knows who does.

The resistance value is differant and it is causing the flasher to act up.

I did the flasher mod to keep the flashers from flashing quick like a bulb is burnt out. It worked for a couple weeks but now nothing. I keep thinking either a short or the turn signal switch. The fact that is does it when the brakes are applied makes me think short where the brake light switch is giving the harness ground. but then why would it do it when the wheel is turned left?? That makes me think turn signal switch because it is the only part that is affected be the wheel turning. I don't know... arghh this is why I hate wiring.. :hammer:

Try cycling the hazard switch back and forth a few times. I have seen the switches cause problems before. The contacts may be caroded.

OK I decided to tear my wiring harness apart and find the source of my problem... Removed the dash and split open the harness... opened the turn signal switch... wasn't really getting anywhere but cleaning up alot of wiring issues... then I starting thinking that the problem is probably in the back half of the truck as it is subjected to the elements. I cut the harness running to the tailights one wire at a time and my issues went away. Now all I need to do is rebuild the harness from the dash to the tailights and I'm all good. Sounds easy enough but I'm sure it will be a pain in the butt.
