New FJ55 owner with a few questions (pics added)
« on: Apr 26, 2006, 10:36:33 PM »
I just picked up a beat up 1969 FJ55 and am wondering how similar these trucks are to the FJ40? I would imagine that most of the parts would be the same but I have no idea. What parts are shared between the two models. I want to get it running but fear I am going to have a hard time finding parts for a Fj55, but maybe not so bad if it shares an engine and axles with a FJ40. Thanks. I will post pictures soon.

No, actually that is one I saw when I was in Corona a few weeks ago. I only wish it was that.

This is it. It is very rough and would need a lot of work to get running. I am undecided as to whether I want to keep it or turn around quick and sell it. If I keep it I would probably convert it to a Chevy drivetrain and axles. I have a K5 blazer with 3/4 ton axles that is ready to donate to the cause.

The floor is pretty rotten and the interior is shot. Three of the four doors won't fully latch. You have to start it with a screw driver. No brakes, bad clutch master cylinder. Mouse infested and very pretty. The seller said that it was driven to where it was parked and ran fine about 6 years ago. He says the 4x4 works good but won't guarentee that anything else works. I hope the neighbors like it.

I don't know anything about these vehicles or even Fj40s for that matter. Any good info you can give me would be much appreciated. What do you guys think I should do with it?

There is a guy up here in WA that has about 12 55's he basically dismantles one at a time and rebuilds them then sells them.  He has TON'S of parts for 40's as well as 55's.  Anything you need let me know and I will get you his name and number.  He even has a FJ 45 pick up in pretty good shape.

Back on subject the drive train parts are interchangable with FJ-40's.

Looks to be a fun project in the making keep us posted

The more I think about it the more I want to build it. Are there any places similar to Marlin that make custom parts for Cruisers? I would be interesed in SBC motor mounts, powersteering conversions etc. Pretty much anything that would make modernizing the thing easier. I looked for a while but mostly found stock replacement stuff. I assume pirate has a lot of info but I haven't looked too hard yet.

Advance Adapters has a lot of conversion parts for 40s. Some of them interchange with 55s but I recently found out that the power steering kits don't. Definately read Mud, lots of great info there.

I ended up selling it on ebay during the summer  I am kicking myself now. I only ended up making 125$ so I should have just kept it and let it continue to rot until I could have done something with it. On the other hand, I know it is going to be put to good use to keep another one going or be restored. Some guy from the Black Hills bought it.

Dude, I feel your pain! I sold mine a couple of years ago for 1200 bucks to a guy in Santa Cruz. It was tough watching it go away. :rivers:, Still regret it but probley never had done anything with it anyway.
