:headscratch: dunno what that is, but if it's from Japan, it's probably a 21R block. I don't recall if they made those in both tall and short.

Rising sun Engines is a Japanese engine importer.  Since Japanese emissions are so strict you cant run them after a certain mileage (I think it's something like 40K, but don't quote me) so the engines get pulled and sold to us.  I bought one from these guys back in high school for my datsun.

so you think it isnt a 22r? Then i wouldn't be able to do the 20r head? ok so now how can you tell if it is a 22r or 21r and the question still stands is it tall or short?

Look on the driver's side of the block, it'll be stamped into the side, near the front.  Either 21R or 22R.

On second thought, just measure the height of the timing cover and report back.

that makes it so much easier..  I was thinking he'd have to take the cover off to measure.

it says 22r on the block, so i now would like to know about engine mods that are cheap and easy with good outcome. Like i said i use my truck to tow and daily driver plus to wheel. I have read on 20r head but it is not much info just people arguing i would like details and good incite thanks.

well if its a "tall" block 80-84,   the best thing is to  use a 20R head intake, timing cover and timing set,  oil pump and spline, all on the 22R block  you'll have more hp and a more useable powerband

It's an 85, it's a short block.

Is this true? I thought I was sportin the stock type motor in my 85.  I know for a fact it is a short deck 22r.

i have seen  what was "thought"  to be a 87 carb engine  turnout to be the "tall" block,.   so you just got to look for the markings  on the left side of the block  to be sure  and measure from the oilpan to the head

that's what I said.  Generally, unless something has been screwed with, 81-84 are tall and 85-95 are short.

i looked on LC and it said that 80-84 tall and 85-95 short the measurement they posted tall is 11.280, so i figured that is would be about 11 and a 1/4 with a tape. short is 11.090 i figured 11 and a 1/16 on a measuring tape. i measured from the oil pan rail to the top of the deck and it was about 11 and a 1/4 so i figured that i have a tall deck witch is what you want for the 20r head if I'm wrong i don't want to buy all the stuff and end up having the wrong block so please tell me if some one knows or can measure theirs that has a tall block and post it thank you.
