Ignitor wiring help
« on: Aug 20, 2007, 09:17:33 PM »
Sorry if this is a simple noob issue. I'm in the process of swapping the 20R engine out of a '79 truck into an '82 truck that had a 22R. Most everything is done, except some wiring. I'm a little confused on how to get the ignitor/coil wired up. The '82 truck has a factory SR5 tach cluster, the '79 had no tach.

The only ignitor I have is from the '79. It has 2 plugs (one has a yellow wire and a brown wire, the other has a black wire [which I assume is GND]). So three wires total. The '79 harness had matching wiring.

The wiring harness in the '82 also has 2 plugs (one has a brown wire, the other has a black wire). Two wires total here. These plugs don't match up (shape wise) with the '79 plugs.

I assume the brown wires connect somehow, and the black wires connect somehow, but my question is: where does the yellow wire coming from the ignitor (actually from the coil) go? I can get pics if needed.

Thanks :conf:

All I have let of my conversion is a picture and I can't make out how it was wired, hope you can. I liked the solid state better but I did keep the old one just in case.

Josh  just use the ignitorand coil  from the 82

If I had it I would. :slap:

Well, I played around with a test light and a volt meter and figured out that the brown and yellow wire on the '79 harness are both ignition switched 12V hot. Yellow wire goes to the + on the coil, the brown wire goes to the ignitor. The one brown wire on the '82 harness is also ignition switched 12V hot, so I just tied my yellow and brown wires to the single brown, and the black to black. I can't crank it yet, so we'll see what happens.  :crossed:
