Wiring an aftermarket Tach
« on: Apr 06, 2006, 02:32:58 PM »
Has anyone wired in an aftermarket tachometer? I recently picked up an Autometer electronic tach. The wiring diagramis fairly straight forward. However the wire that is supposed to connects to the coil to recieve the RPM signal, I am unsure where exactly it should be connected to. If anyone has done this please help me out.

what engine?  Should be able to tap into the IGf signal wire for rpm, IIRC

Easy, hook up the power to a switched ign source, the backlight to a source switched with your dash lights, and the ground to well, a ground, and the last wire goes to the extra plug you have coming off of your coil, should be green with a black plug

I am assuming that the plug you are talking about is the one that has two wires on it, with the plug housing being black. The colors of the wires in the plug are black (+) and white (-). The instructions say to connect the RPM signal wire to the negative coil wire. So I would therefor assume it is the negative wire on this plug that I tie into?
Anyone have any thoughts on this. Pictures?

I just did this on my 94 to hook up a factory tach.  Locate the igniter and coil.  There should be a six pin grey connector.  It should have five wires in the connector.  Black is the one you want.  This wire according to the EWD, feeds the tach and the IG- terminal in the check connector.  So, if you want to test it out before you splice in (by soldering), then plug you tachometer wire into the IG- port in the check connector.
