i got a 84 with a 22r i think i have the onwers manual and it might have a wireing guide in it or just pickup a 83 shop manual. at kragens and use a diagram from there ill look in my ownersmanual tonight and see if theres one. id like to just be able to help u from my brain but unless im looking at my truck i cant remember anything. if u got any specific questions i could look at my trucks wireing and help u out

My motor is out right now, but I'll go down and take some pictures of the alternator wires and coil wires after work. Any other wirings that you need? I'll also try to scan the Haynes wiring diagrams tonight so that you have have those as well.

I wouldn't think there would be much difference between the 20r and the 22r, just the head design and smaller bore.

the 20R  alt will bolt right in, but you gotta have the external regulator,  if you have that on the 79  just get the 20R  alt

but the 22R alt  usually has a better output,  and internal regulator
