4A-GE in a 4Runner?
« on: Jan 25, 2006, 11:24:10 AM »
This one might just be a question for Big Mike, but I am gonna put it here anyway. I have access to a 16 valve 4A-GE out of a Corrolla GTS, and I was wondering how hard it would be to put in my 4Runner, if it was at all even possible. I read that the trannies are different, but are there adapters to bolt up a G52 or what ever the EFI 5spd is to the 4A-GE? Would I gain a bunch of power, or would the swap just be a PITA? The Corolla is a 5sp as well. Thanks guys.

Anything is possible with enough money, but I don't think the 4AGE is the best engine for your 'runner.  The 4AGE engine is a high-revving engine, that really doesn't have the low-end torque necessary for a truck.  I'm sure BigMike will chime in, but I think that you'd be better off going to a 3RZ or hot-rodded 22RE

4a-ge  doesnt have the torque  you want at a low enough rpm,  i think it peaks at like 4000  the 22 peaks at around 2200

The 4ag might be a decent candidate for a samurai since they're so light, but will be a terrible choice in a truck.  I've had an 85 corolla gts with this engine and they're total dogs until you get em revving, then they're like a whole nother engine.  You'd be better off finding a samurai or sand rail to run that thing in....or give it to me so I can!
