4th generation 3rz VVTI into a 1985 4runner
« on: Jan 27, 2006, 08:25:04 PM »
hello everybody i am new to the forum and i need some help and info.

i just bought the 4runner about 3 weeks ago for $1000. i stripped out the interior and pulled the engine, tranny, and t-case out.  today i bought a 3rz vvti that was from a  2005 2wd 5spd tacoma with 1100 miles on it. the truck was practically brand new. the owner works in the film industry and was shooting a commercial where the truck was to be dumped into the ocean. before they could do that they were mandated to remove the engine, tranny, electricals, brakes, alternator, radiator, steering pump, etc... and any other item with hazardous waste.  to make a long story short i bought the whole she-bang for $2700 everything intact and stilll bolted together. now i really need some help putting this project together, especially wiring and some mounts. i plan to run the 3rz with a new 5 spd 4wd tranny.

Talk to BigMike he is the 3RZ wiring expert. Anything you need to know about the wiring he will know. Just not sure how much he has been active on the BBS lately since he is in Japan with his girlfriend.

85 4crawler,

Contrary to popular belief, there is no such thing as a 4th generation 3RZ. The 3RZ's life span was from late 1994 - late 2004.

The 2005+ 4cylinder Tacoma's are still equipped with a 2.7 liter engine, however it is the new 2TR-FE engine that has VVTi. As far as I know, the 3RZ was never offered with VVTi and was discontinued after 2004.

Assuming the 2TR-FE still uses a W59 transmission, then you would be able to easily fit it with the drivetrain of your '85 4Runner. As for everything else, you are pretty much on your own. I have not looked into the wiring for the 2TR, however I would love to have that instead of the 3RZ  but at that price, I could have nearly three 3RZ swaps-

Oh you mean Highlander.  Its the same as the base Camry motor. Look on Toyotas website.

2.4-liter double overhead cam (DOHC) 16-valve VVT-i 4-cylinder
155 hp @ 5700 rpm  162 lb.-ft. @ 4000 rpm

Its a transverse engine layout like a front wheel drive. No belllhousings to put in a truck

I believe the new 2.7 (2TR-FE) is 160 Hp and 188 Tq, or something like that. 10 more HP and 11 more toqrue than the 3RZ, but it's not just the numbers in this case, since the 2TR uses the VVT-i, it will have a MUCH flatter torque band and power band, and I am sure it will make better gas mileage and burn cleaner. ahhhhhhhh technology

thanks big mike aka toyota guru for the info on the new 2.7 2TR-FE. i gotta agree with mike on that " ahhhhhhhh technology".  so far, i pulled out the tranny, the t-case, and disconnected the driveshafts off. i plan to do a frame up build up. next part will be to pull the body off and degrime the chassis and replace the worn rubber bodymounts with some polyurethane substitutes.  i'll try to post up some pics as i get further into the project. anticipation is a mutha... this stuff haunts me day and night. man i love it.

Actually. the new Tacoma 5 speed manual is an updated R-series.

So what your saying is that I could bolt it up to my R-151, this has been the main thing holding me back from doing a 3RZ swap, I looked around and you can pick up one of these up for about as much as a low mileage 3RZ.  Does any one know the ins and outs of these engines, like is it drive by wire like the new V6, and how big is it compared to a 22RE or 3RZ? What other vehichles does it come in?

Thanks
Late
Joe.

Hummn! Is the gearbox a R150F with a 160 mm long input shaft?
