Skid plates / UHMWPE
« on: Nov 02, 2021, 08:06:15 AM »
Ultra high molecular weight polyethylene.   I think that is the term...

I saw somewhere(don't remember) somebody made skid plates with this.  Anyone here know anything about that?

I have seen this material added to the bottom of metal skids. Never seen it as an actual skid plate.

I think you could get away with just some supports underneath it.

(beams spaced X inches apart, don't know what X would be).

I think i remember where I saw it.  Jesse at TLT(trail less travelled).  I could be wrong.

The comment about over metal makes sense, strength wise.  I can't see how it would be strong enough on it's own.  I just like the idea of having less friction than metal.

My over all problem is skids bought from the mainland companies all charge shipping the same cost as the product.  As in I pay double...  I cannot find someone on my island who will let me use there metal brake, otherwise I'd try to make my own.

I'm still looking for skid plates.  I ordered one from CBI.  It didn't even come close to lining up with the bolt holes(SCRAP METAL NOW)
The cost of return shipping is a waste.  Money spent on a skid that fits would be better put to use.

So, companies and experiences...  Who has opinions on which?  Fitment?

The other question. There isn't the kind of rock crawling here as there is on the mainland so should i buy steal or aluminum?  Light weight vs. strength.
