I have a 1984 4Runner with a 22R and Carb. I am having an issue with the carb. When starting cold, it goes to a normal high idle. The problem is, after it is warm, I cannot get it to come off of the high idle. I was playing a bit with it this morning, and I moved the choke linkage on the back of the carb, and the engine idled down to normal, around 800 RPM. As soon as I touch the accelerator and then let off, it goes right back to high idle. Does anybody know what might be wrong? Thanks.

It's an electric choke, but there is a linkage on the back of the carb.  It might have to do with just the high idle.

I am thinking that there is something wrong with the choke now.  I can hit the throttle very quickly and it returns to normal.  I also unhooked the linkage and it is normal.

the spring is  on the  shaft  between the  hi idle cam  and the carb body,   but   maybe its just really dirty

Sounds like the thermo spring in the electric choke is not getting any voltage to heat it up, or it is wasted. Check and see if it is getting any voltage with the key on.

You were right.  The reason I am not getting it to kick off of high idle is that I have a bigger problem.  It's my charging system.  I just replaced the alternator and voltage regulator because the charge and brake light were on.  But nothing changed.  My charging system is not working.  I checked the fuse block under the hood and the charge fuse was blown.  I replaced it and still nothing... Checked the box with a test light and there is no power going to it.  The only thing I can think of now it that the wiring loom from the alternator is toast.

You might want to check voltage right at the alternator batt terminal? Do it with the engine running

I found the problem.  It was the new Voltage regulator that I bought at Vatozone.  I switched back in the old regulator and everything works fine now.

Rehashing and old post for some detailed info.
Quick question regarding electric choke spring setting on an AISIN carb rebuild.

I've disassembled my carb to soak it and to do basic gasket replacements, gauge the float bowl etc.
When I go to put it back together I am not sure exactly how much tension should be on the electric choke spring.
My electric choke was riveted in and when I drilled out the rivets, the choke cap popped off and I wasn't able to see the original
tension setting.

Any advice would be appreciated.

If I remember right, I set mine so that it just closes the choke when cold. I also replaced those rivets with socket head cap screws so that I can adjust the choke in the future
