Header wrap pro's/cons and where to get it?
« on: Apr 24, 2016, 10:41:07 AM »
85 22RE have Thorley header, need to replace header gasket so thought this would be a good time
To wrap it while I have it off. Would like to know the pros and cons of doing this and what is the best
Wrap to get? Pics from anyone that is running wrap on their trucks would be appreciated. Thanks in advance.

The con with wrap is that it can trap moisture, which can cause the header to prematurely rust.

Summit racing carries several brands.

why are you wrapping the header? is it too hot for stuff around it or? have you thought of radiant sheeting like dynamat or something similar for the firewall instead?

summit has it, jegs, pretty much any performance shop, you can even get it at oreilly or autozone these days

what is your header made out of?

Thanks, didn't know auto zone and O'Reilly's has it. Just trying to keep the heat down as much
As possible under the hood. I noticed that after 31yrs the wiring is getting brittle near the header
And figured the wrap would help. The headers came chromed new and I had them Jet Hot coated
When new. That was a big waste of money because they started to peel a few weeks later.

sounds like jet hot didn't sandblast the chrome off, ceramic coating is a good thermal barrier, scavenges heat well, and will lower temps a little under hood

I would just re-do the wiring.  Cheaper and like you said its old wiring.  On the plus side, you can make it longer and route it away from the header.     I had to this to mine.  Well worth it.  I bought a used harness, and spliced in all the original color coded wires.  And I lengthened some to make it a cleaner setup.

I noticed that after 31yrs the wiring is getting brittle near the header

If the wires are still intact, you can wrap them in cool tape, the tape reflects heat up to 1500*.

The premature rusting and deterioration is what has always kept me from doing it.There are other methods of coating (internal and external) that can reduce the temps quite a bit. Like the above, just rewrap the wiring that is close to the exhaust and be done with it.
