They are pretty common throughout the United States. We even have them here in CA at an elevation of 4,000 feet. The ones here are very small though, maybe half an inch at the largest. I used to catch them all the time as a kid. I believe there are over 900 different species worldwide. They are definitely a lot more common in the desert states and they get larger there than they do here in Northern CA.
