The temp light is coming on because the transmission is overheating as a result of going slow in low range. Most often this is caused by a faulty fan clutch. You are not getting enough air flow through the radiator and the auto is overheating. Add silicon to the factory fan clutch and/or add a trans cooler in front of your radiator.

I am hoping that you do not have low oil pressure and worn transmission componets.
The engine temp gauge will not solve the problem.
