on my truck, i get less mileage when I advance it.

According to this economy is linked to a lean fuel mixture and not directly to timing.  It also states that a rich fuel mixture will develop maximum power with less advance than a lean fuel mixture will.  It's all a balance and the optimal timing is determined by the fuel mixture.
