My '91 has a 2" BL and 1.5" ball-joint spacers, and w/about 2" cut out of the fender and beating back the body seam/firewall to the body mount, I clear the 35" Xterrains fine.  the 315 BFG's I was running before rubbed under full compression.

IMO, a selectable locker is about the only way to go, regardless of being a DD or trailer queen.  Granted they can cost twice as much, but being able to turn them on/off when needed makes wheeling a little more easier.
