Ok, here is a video of when my transfercase's base fell apart and the snap ring came out of its groove. I could pull the shifter up and it would not stay where it is supposed to because it would pop up and would be able to flop around all over the place as seen in the video. Just ignore the music and stuff lol. To fix it, I pulled the shifter base off of the transfer case, pulled the small rubber seal/boot up, cleaned everything out, greased it all and reinstalled the snap ring in its groove (much easier if you have a freind to help you). Anyways, below is the vid, and as you can see the shifter is not staying in the "J" shift pattern.
