Yeah run them with a airgun, when you got somebody experienced doing it.  But when you got a newb at the tire store, they will run them down by hand!  That's the way I have it done, just to keep from having a problem like you just had, except on the hwy with a flat would get really costly, when you got to call a tow truck!
