No clearance issues if you file aluminum motor housing a bit. I found a 9/16 U bolt was harder to fit on the inside so I used a 1/2 U bolt and double nutted it. I guess you can get away with not welding to increase the surface of the housing mating surface, but since I had my front axle all apart, I welded mine and filed it flat. I wanted to do it right the first time and not have to redo it.
