if you decide to go with a gm engine-4.3, 5.0, 5.3, or 5.7-they all have the same bolt pattern so any gm tranny will bolt up. if you wanna go manual, use either an sm465 or an nv4500. MUCH stiffer clutch than a toyota clutch (i just went from driving my 81 gmc 305-sm465 to driving an 87 4runner 22re-w56b). differance is nearly the same crawl gear on the sm465 and nv4500 (6.55:1), but the nv4500 has overdrive. advance adapters makes a bellhousing to bolt a gm motor to a toyota manual tranny. if you decide to go with a 350 (unnecessary, go with the 4.3 if you want the high power) then go with a dana 300 t-case or a marlin crawler box, an np205 (though very sturdy) has a horrible low range at 1.96:1, and running a doubler setup will cost you roughly 1100 bucks. though dang near bombproof, its major overkill. just my :twocents:
