Always use the same size wire or larger when extending. A smaller gauge will act as a resistor and cause voltage drop.

Also, how did you make the connection? Crimps or solder? Crimps will have a tendency to corroded and be a problem too. Solder and shrink tube is your best choice.

Can you describe in better detail what happens and does not happen when you try to start it?
