All L45 4 speeds, and L50 5 speeds, had the 75mm x 20mm, 63/32RNZ input bearing. This is also the front bearing on the lower counter gear of the transfercase.
Although Toyota never had a recall, the dealer did replace failed 63/32 roller bearings [$15.00] with a pin roller style bearing, 032-2 [$42.00]. Unfortunately, the more expensitive 032-2 [75mm x 20 mm] bearing has also had a poor service record.
In late 82', the new, redesigned L52 was introduced which featured a 80mm x 20mm, B32-14UR or [32BC08] input bearing. This improved roller bearing had much larger balls, and has had a fair service record.
This upgrade required a new larger nosecone and the matching overbored case.
Since the L52 case is the most sought after of the early cast iron boxes, [to someone who cares], I long ago begin boring the early case and nosecone to accept the improved $28.00 bearing.
I have built L45's using the 80 x 20 mm case and bearing. Everthing from your current trans will go right togeather.
My L52HD trans uses a 80 x 23 mm closed face bearing that has an excellent service record and as a added bonus, the improved gear set also has a greater helix angle resulting in more tooth contact for a stronger yet transmission.
Although i have never had the opportunity, come to think of it, i could use the 80 x 23mm bearing, and build a L45HD.
