This is a common problem on the early trucks.

1. Check for a worn or missing trans handle seat or socket.
    I invented a heavy duty replacement seat and socket--they are on my web site.

2. T-case handle could be installed 180 degrees backwards.

If all else fails, remove the t/case handle, mount it in a vise and then slide a section of pipe over the handle and bend it as required.
Using a torch is not advised due to the two piece vulcanized design of the handle.
