torn frame... what do you do
« on: Jul 06, 2009, 06:03:06 PM »
OK long story short I tore the frame rear spring hanger both sides....  :willynilly: I know in hind site I should have boxed it in but since I didnt  :smack: what should I do to fix it  :headscratch:

Plate it with what I have or get some box tubing and stick a chunk of it in there and weld her back together ???

A piece of 2x4 rectangular tubing will fit inside the frame rail.  I would cut off the damaged part and put in a new frame extension.  Here's mine.  I still need to put some gussets on it and an extra plate on the bottom to make a level place to mount the spring hanger.  I'm going to add a cross member at the back as well.

I'll have to look into that I have a box there now, I need to see if there is room

maybe my 87 is different than what yer working on but the frame rail is only 3"...... found that out after I got some 2X6 rec. tubing cut to 4"...  I should have checked  :smack:

edit: the Marlin bumper bracket is in the way  :smack:

as far as cutting off anything  :shake: unless I take off the runner body that aint gona happen  :dunno: what i will do is clean up the affected area and slide the 2X6X4 into the end of the frame and weld away, I may need to remove the tailgate to do so but if I gotta... I gotta  :gap:

step 1. weld frame where its torn
step 2. box 2X6 cut open
step 3. weld to frame above hanger
step 4. weld everywhere it could tear again
step 5. hope it all holds together  :crossed:

i am not a fan of step 5.

neither am I but if it happened once then...

here ya go Sean as you can see the box is in the way fer a crossmember from rail to rail, but what if I used a piece of thick tubing to go from the bumper mount to the other bumper mount and use the bracket as a crossmember as close to trhe box as I can get and weld her up there

ok  :disturbed:
welded all the cracks up
caped up the end of the frame
welded a piece of tube to the bumper hangers
welded the shackle hangers to the tube

Im positive it should hold  :gap: everything is welded to each other and the only thing I have to do is plate the inside of the frame (no steel)
then it should not break again... not that its gonna but better safe than sorry(again)

How about using some channel. You could weld it in place then drill the holes to mount the bumper brackets back on.
