power steering on an 83
« on: Feb 24, 2009, 05:44:19 PM »
so im putting a powere steering setup off an 85 pickup onto a 83 pick up that had no powere steering. I think i got everything i need but one thing i didnet grab was was the steering shaft that goes up from the box to the firewall and i measured the boxes and the one with power steering is 10 inches long i think and the one without is 8.5 inches long so i was wondering am i gonna have to cut and modify the shaft or what do you suggest i do also is there any other issues i might run into.  Just to be clear this isnt a crossover set up this is all just push pull steering. thanks ,

Dillon

the 83 shaft is shorter because the firewall is closer aka engine bay is smaller than the 85

pwr steering was a  option all the way back to 79 so any 79-83 truck will have the parts you need

you can also slip the flat part of the steering shaft (between u joints) by drilling the plastic stops out

on the flat sides of the shaft there will be 2 little plastic pins that you need to use a punch and beat out and then it will allow it to slide in and out....

While in there, add a cooler, or make your resy bigger, or something.  The system overheats easily once you get into the 37" tire range.  (altough @ 37, it's just more of a PITA than "got to stop and let it cool")
