converting those N/A 7M's to turbo is more costly then slightly modding a GTE

Id say stay N/A. more reliable more a wheeler. But I know what ya mean, turbos are sick.

Also if you have the money, go r151f.
I would imagine blowing up trannies (w56) isnt too much fun.
You figure a tranny made to withstand 100 hp, probably wont last too long with high miles and double the hp.

Minitrucks shoulda just came with 7m's from the factory!

Question: Do the N/A have piston coolers?? :dunno: My buddy told me that he believes I have a Turbo block... and he has a turbo, computer, exhaust manifold, full intake, injectors, AFM, timing cover, blah blah blah... all the goodies minus a wiring harness which I still have to source! so I might be going turbo if thats the case.  :biggthumpup:I'm thinking about trading him one of my solid axles, hysteer, and a few other nicnacs for ALL of his supra parts including a W58 and automatic trans with computer...... WHAT TO DO???  :hammerhead:

I'd like to throw in my  :twocents: before you throw down cash on that tranny. I don't think there is any easy way to bolt that up to a 7m. You should look into the availability of that conversion bellhousing before you count on that. That site has been up for a long time and the bell housing were never actually for sale as far as I know. The guy who was supposed to cast those had problems and I don't think he ever got them produced. He used to do cut and weld bell housings so that might be an option. He is suprarunner over on pirate. He also has a sight supracharged which will be a big help to you doing this swap.

The cheapest and simplest way would be to run a w56. They are pretty strong and should hold up if you don't soup up the motor to much. The 7m is not a low end torque monster which is what breaks things. Put 23 spline in the rear case and a longfield output and you should be good to go. I had a 7m n/a in my 4runner for two years and it was a fun motor. More low end than a 22r and it really shined pulling hills on the freeway.

If you run your rad. up front try to space it out from the front of the motor and run a pulling fan. I fit mine inside the stock sheet metal with two pusher fans on the outside. It was fine 95% of the time but on long slow hill climbs it would start to heat up. I think the problem was with the rad. right against the motor there was no where for the air to flow no matter how big of fans you have.

If he is see if you can find out how it was done. I did this swap three or so years ago so there might be new ways to go about it. The problem is the difference in the input length. The early 4x4 r series have a 6.5" input and the supra r154 has a 7.5" input.

There are a couple ways of dealing with this. You can cut and weld a bell housing to make it the right length. You can also install the guts of a r154 in a 4x4 r tranny. The down side of this is you have to tear down both trannys and my understanding is you cannot keep the low first gear from the turbo tranny. There is a guy on pirate who went this route successfully.

There might be a third option. The newer r150s in the 95+ tacomas and 4runners had a ruffly 7" input. It might be possible to use one of these with a r154 bellhousing with a bit milled off both flanges. The down side of this is it has a chain driven case and would need an adapter to use gear drive. It would allow you to run 23 spline in the front case.

Here is a pic. of a 4x4 tranny with r154 input and bellhousing. From 81snowtoys build thread on PBB.

Welded bell housing from Bigtoy302 on pbb

I'm not saying the r series isn't better I'm just not sure it's worth the extra trouble and cost.

The r series has a lot deeper waffles on the forward section. It is also bigger around than a w or g series. If you have a r series and a gear driven case with no adapter on the back of the tranny it is an r151 or at a least has an r151 tail housing.

If it is an R the thing that would help this guy the most is to check out your bell housing and see how they made that work.

Id say just go w56 with w58 bellhousing, and 5m motor mount rubbers. cheap, simple,  and will last a little while Im sure if you arent balls to the wall all the time. Maybe don't build your motor for a bunch of power so your tranny survives? Unless you got the money for an R series trans, go for it.

Well I'd like to build it up to hold up to some SERIOUS wheelin..... I have 3 w56's lying around so.... the w series would be simple and CHEAP.... BUT I want to run 23 splines in both cases.... thats the only deal.... so if it comes down to cutting and welding a bellhousing then so be it... Its not like I am in a hurry to build this, I want it done right and its going to be at LEAST a year before this thing runs... I still have to source my axles (trading an 85 front for turbo/computer/blahblahblah) so I just need to clean up on parts to fund the build!  I will be posting up a sale on a few things like trannys and cases and what not once I get stuff more organized. just got into another house and we have to remodel a bunch of :pokinit: so time is alittle scarce...

Keep the info coming! :beerchug:

yup... its getn  the fj80 axles though so itll all be custom except for steering arms...

if you go 93-97 year model for the FJ80 axles... you will need 16in or larger on wheels as they use slightly larger brakes on those years. just though id throw that out there.
