Nice tow rig!  Can't go wrong for $3K!!  That's next on the list for me.  I'll have my wife's SUV paid off in Dec. and then it's time I get something.  Until then, I'll just keep borrowing my dad's CTD to get me through this wheeling season.  Wheeling with a tow rig / trailer is so nice.  If something happens, you basically just need to get your crawler off of the trail and onto the trailer.

Have you bought or have access to a trailer yet?

This is a sick picture of your Toyota in the Golden Crack!!  Nice flex!!

No trailer yet. I have some friends with one, but none that I would ask to borrow from unless I really needed it.  Hoping to get one by the end of summer.  Need to get the truck in driving shape first. And oh yeah, I have to finals the next two weeks, so its not going to happen till the end of may.

And I love that pic of my truck.  That was this year in Moab, and I JUST put the pics on my comp. After finals I will have some time to post up some more pics of our 2010 run!

Re-seal the injectors, they are leaking diesel out while it runs, and letting air in while is off.  Kit is $100 from napa.  I also want to do ALL new fluids.  It takes like 14qts of oil, and I want to run synthetic, so it will be a little pricey for oil.

That's the ONLY thing I don't miss about being in college (I'm a CU alumni :D) - FINALS.  Other than that, college was great.  Loved every second of it except the couple weeks leading into finals and finals themselves.

Good luck with the exams!

Sucks you might have to replace the injectors!

and I think you should wire the "fog lamps" to turn on when you activate the high beams or even have an override switch in the cab as well...

Lol all 8 injectors for $180... Sold.  One for Rock Rangers PSD is $300!

Not sure what I will do with the lamps for now, I just want to get the fuel leaks taken care of and registered so that I can drive it!

Which bearing?  Do you have your leftover stuff from when you went to duals?  Maybe you've got an extra bearing in there.  Man, that sucks.  I was looking forward to wheeling with you guys.

Thanks!

At the bottom of my compressor page, someone kinda took my part numbers and ran with it. Interesting read, but I have some good ideas that will make mine cheaper and eaiser to build.

Alright, so it has been 7 months since we got back from Moab. Give me a break, I am a little SLOW!  Funny its closer to our next run next year, than our last run.  Better late than never right?

So the plan was to leave Friday 3/19 for Rabbit Ears Pass to get the last snowmobiling trip of the season in.  Had one of the worst blizzards that I have driven through on the way out, and apparently it covered most of the state, because it was nasty from Denver all the way to the Ears.  Saw an amazing amount of cars/trucks upside down, on their side, and one Saturn about 500 yards off the road in 4 ft of snow (I have no idea how they did that).  Got up Saturday AM to an beautiful day for sledding.  However after about two hours on the sled I started coughing bad. Later that afternoon I headed out over Gore pass, and dropped onto I70 and headed off to Moab.  I arrived in town about 10:30pm, and by that time I was SICK SICK!  So I missed out on allot of Moab, but it seems that everyone else had a good time!

First trail we ran on Sunday AM was Hells Revenge:
We had two Yotas, a Ranger, and one of our friends opted for the dirt bike.
Airing down at the trail head. They paved the parking lot at the trail head... VERY NICE!

I really don't have many pics of this trail. I barley got out of the truck because I felt like poo. BUT! I did escalator, and I got it on video. (maybe I will post to youtube if I can figure out the camera)

It was not near as hard as I thought it was. in '08 Hollywood attempted it, and things went south fast in the last stair/hole. Don't get me wrong, some HUGE pucker factor, but she walked RIGHT up it!

tip over challenge (for refference the dude in the back is standing vertical).

I think I took the next day off after that, but Tuesday we  Attempted Cliffhanger, but I wasn't in much shape to drive, and it was pretty intense.  We could still see the trail head after about an hour, and our buddy dropped his bike on his leg (didn't hurt himself bad), after that we called it and turned around. Got some good shots of the wife driving, and a few nice shot of Stubby.

After turning around, we headed to Kane Creek Canyon:
This trail was awesome. Not really hard, but it takes you some really cool places, with some fun spots. LOTS of water! But only one cool pic.

Wednesday we did Klondike Bluffs:
This trail is neat. Really easy with two challenging spots. Lots of cool dinosaur foot prints, and the only mud we found in Moab!

While we were walking around looking at dinosaur foot prints, my dog Rachet, found a big stick and decided it should not be in the water anymore. It was entertaining watching him drag it out of the water.

I am foggy on what day we did Poison Spider Mesa, Golden Spike, and Gold Bar Rim:
Wedgy on Poison Spider

Cool spots on Golden Spike:

And of course the Crack!

All and all it was a good trip.  I missed ALLOT because I was sick. There was more than one day that I didn't even get out of bed, and the wife just went with the rest of the group.  Next year I am not going to burn it at both ends getting ready, hopefully that means I won't be sick!

I guess 4 years on 35" tires and steering in wedges finally took its toll on the factory steering box mounts....

Well, I haven't done much to the truck in a while.  I have been in and epic battle with death wobble for over a year!  When I found the busted steering box mount I figured I found the problem.

Got the steering box fixed (that was this spring)

I used a 3" hole saw to make the cut out for the steering box.  Tried to keep it as clean as possible, I think it worked out nice.

After the steering box was fixed I was sure I was done with my DW problems.... No such luck.  I tried to get the tires ballanced, but no one could balance them.  Than I tried the air soft BB trick, but that made things WAY worse.  I finally said screw this  :pokinit:, and bought new alloy rims and some 35" KM2's  Truck drives like a DREAM!

I am going to try and get some parts together for Winter break.
  • Want to build a new set of front springs, as the truck sits on its bump stops ALL THE TIME.
  • Re-do my shocks in the rear, and get the spare tire under the bed, to free up some bed space.
  • Zip locker for the front and some 30 splines
  • Tacoma front brakes, using the FROR kit

I got a free, broken winch a few weeks ago.  It's a Ramsey Pro9000X.  The solenoid burned up  :shocking:, and the motor has seen better days, lucky for me it takes the same motor that I was using in my onboard air thread (which is dead for now) .  It needed about $40 worth of parts, and a solenoid, which I got from SummitRacing for pretty cheap.

I took it all apart, sandblasted and wire wheeled the crap out of it, primed it, and painted it OD green.

And the solenoid, from summits site.

I am going to order some synthetic line, and aluminum hawse fairlead after I get it all back together and working!

This showed up in the mail today.  Ordered them on Friday, and they are here on Tuesday, kinda cool living so close to FROR!

I am hoping that I can get this installed, along with new front leaf springs, and build a mount for my winch over winter break!

I ordered and installed a Sky Manufactuing 3/4" less than stock pitman arm.  Fits perfect!  And I can now remove that stupid rectangle tube bump stop extension that my truck sits on!

Here is a before shot.  It's hard to tell but the TRE is less than 1" away from the spring.

And after.

« Reply #298 on: Sep 15, 2014, 07:04:12 PM »
So it has been a little while since I have posted... well the truck has been running quite well, and I haven't broken anything lately... However in the last few months the motor has started burning an alarming amount of oil, and eating antifreeze to boot.  I had also started getting a new motor ready to go for my wife's truck, however her trucks motor is still ticking just fine (250k on the original 22re... slow but it still works just fine!), so I am jacking the motor!!  I hadn't posted on that thread much, but here it is: http://board.marlincrawler.com/index.php?topic=96013.new#new

Long story short, I want MORE HP, and FORCED INDUCTION!  I also want something different, and something cheep... so I came up with a buick 3.8l with a super charger.  The motor was pretty cheap, but when I pulled the intake manifold off to replace the gasket, there was allot of burnt sludge on the sides the valley, so I decided to tear down the whole thing.  The rest of the engine looked great, the cross hatching from the original honing was still visible:

I had the block hot tanked to get the grime off of it, and then I re-assembled the engine with out the internals (don't want to invest in rebuilding this thing until I know it fits).  It is currently bolted to the engine stand waiting for the transmission to be done.

I ended up buying a BRAND NEW Tacoma input (need a longer input shaft for this setup).  Pricy stuff, but hey, now i know my transmission is in tip top shape with new parts.  Old VS New:

As for the adapter... I have to keep reminding myself that this was built for a different transmission (an AX-15, see here: http://www.novak-adapt.com/catalog/adapters/engine_to_transmission/ax15/kit_gmax15.htm).  The adapter came with no directions, and the bolts didn't fit with my 1988 camaro 2.8l bell housing, I ended up going out and buying some socket head cap screws which fit great.  Also, the bearing plate had to be modified in order to get the adapter bolted up tight:

But after some huffing and puffing, and maybe an hour of test fitting and the grinding, I got the whole thing bolted up.  All and all, considering that they thing was designed around a different transmission (with the same internals), it wasn't too big of a deal to do what I did.  That being said, it looks like it is going to clock the engine to the right a bit, which I didn't expect all.  At the onset of this, I was planning on retaining my current cross-member in the location that it is, so that I don't have to change any of the in cab interfaces (shifters 'n stuff), hopefully it being a few degrees to the right won't matter.  Anyway here it is, all cleaned up and ready to be test fit!

While doing research for this swap (some good stuff on Pirate), I came across a recommendation for Tennessee clutch supply for customs clutches for cheap.  I called them up and the dude was super helpful, he set me up with a HD pressure plate, and new flywheel, and a custom clutch disk that has the taco splines in the center, and is a 9.5 inch OD clutch disk.  I also decided to bump it to a dual friction clutch disk, since I will be putting allot of HP through this clutch and I don't want slippage.

Anway, all the parts showed up in a week or so, and then sat on the floor of my office for two months before I got ready to use them... I got them out last night and well... the clutch disk is not 9.5 inches... it is 8 7/8 inch.  No bueno!  I am going to have to give the guy a call tomorrow, even though I lost my receipt  :tantrum:

I thought his image was going to show the difference better then it does... but you get the idea:

I am waiting on a throw out bearing now, and need to get some brass so that I can make a pilot bushing, or maybe a bearing adapter.

More to come!
