OBA setup with superflow comp.
« on: Mar 09, 2006, 07:10:10 PM »
Im almost done with the set up. I wanted to have OBA for airing up my 36" iroks after hitting the trail. Also for the occasional use of air tools and soon for activating an ARB locker. I didnt want to spend to much but also have a pretty quick setup.

I found a Superflow MV50 air compressor on ebay for 60$. Heard pepboys used to sell them for around 25$ They put out 2.54 CFM and are the best bang for the buck i could find. Mounted under the hood hardwired to a switch in the cab. Ran a one way check valve to a 1-3 manifold with PSI gauge. Mounted a 2.5 gal. tank from onboardair.com above the rear axle under the bed. Ran one coupler by the front bumper and one out by the back bumper for air hose hook up. I will post pics of the whole set up soon and time how long it takes to air 1 tire up. I still need to buy a pressure switch to splice into the MV50s power. A 85psi on/105psi off should be good.
Heres a couple write-ups on the MV50

                            -----------------------
TOTAL                        $213.00

Ok i got everything finished up. Today i hooked up the pressure switch its a 85psi on/ 115psi off, cost 23$ from central. I ran 2, 3-1 manifolds together so i have one open spot that i put a plug in for now. That will be where i run my arb off of a little later.

I used the set up on saturday to air back up and it took over 20 minutes to air back up from 8-25 PSI. To make the process faster im going to buy a 4air system from 4crawler http://www.4crawler.com/4x4/ForSale/4air.shtml

Heres some pictures

2.5 gal tank from onboardair.com
Used a drain thingy on the bottom to empty any moisture build up or if the pressure switch stops working. Ran one line to the comp. and the other goes to a couple on the rear bumper.

Another shot, you can see the relay under it. The pressure switch was wired into the relays ground. Theres the in-cab switch wired and ON...

Front coupler. It will also be moved to the top of the bumper where the winch mount is. Once i get the winch mounted i will move the coupler.

If you have any questions about the set up let me know what you think.

Been using a setup like that for the last year.  Bought a 7 gallon tank from Walmart for $20.    Keeps up with a friends arb compressor.   Only thing is, mine doesn't like to start with pressure on the pump.  60+ lbs and it will pop a fuse.  I plumbed in a valve to get around this.

I ran a one way check valve also. Ya it does take some time to air up,they are 36" tires though.... but for a 60$ comp its worth it. One day i might go with a faster compressor or get a powertank for airing the tires up. To buy a quickair thats as fast its almost 200$

15 bucks seems a little cheap. you clearly had parts lying around which im sure dont. or your not running an oiling system, theres a cheaper way to set it up. if i were to run a toy compressor i would be sure to carry a spare because if they don't get enough oil there toast. but when working properly they air tires up fawking quick
Im an OG

only thing i had laying around was the tank and the hose and hose clamps ( already had a hose )  my engine came with a ac pump but i burnt it up because i forgot to oil it one night and i aired up 4 trucks worth of tires from 5 psi or less to street pressure.

bought another for 10 bucks and i spent like 5 bucks on a air fitting to run the hose i had off the tank  .  wire up a switch to hot  plumb to the tank and bam  done.  right now i just put in a teaspoon of oil  about every other time i use it or unless im airing up a bunch of people i do it then. dont have my oil seperator yet  and  im going to find a windshield washer bottle + motor and hook it up to feed oil into my pump easily.

tanks are easy to come by.. hell you could probably make one out of a old propane tank..  seen it done once before i believe.

theres some toy ac pumps that bolt right into smog pump brackets  cant remember which one  but that makes it so you dont have to build brackets.

I would like to go that direction with the ac pump, but i dont have ac in my truck. So i would need a list of parts and a bracket to mount it to. Could you right out a list of needed parts?

Anybody know if Front Range still sells their ac conversion kit?  That would have had everything you need but the tank.

I was looking for the webpage as a guide to what you need, but I don't think FROR offers the kit anymore.   :dunno:

I know you need some extra little parts to add to the ac system but im saying what do i need to start with? Do i just need a belt,ac pump bracket, and the ac pump its self and a little wiring and plumbing? I have to start from scratch. Tell me all you know
