your alternator is most likely going out.

When the alternator stops charging, both the brake and the charge light come on.  It has nothing to do with your brake fluid level.  Definitly check the alternator output.  If the harness from the alternator to the regulator is butchered, that piece can be ordered from toyota.  It's possible that you could just pull the alternator, dissasemble the rear of it and put new brushes in it.

check your underdash fuses, specifically the engine and headlight fuses.  Mine was blown and would do the same thing.

The alternator gramlin strikes again...he got me a couple months ago!
IFS is best kept at ambient temperature in a pile of scrap in the backyard.  When kept under a functioning vehicle, it tends to greatly diminish said vehicle's offroad ability.     -reklund5

Ya know every problem may have more than one solution, but my Alternator and Brake light came on together and replacing the alternator was the fix. :dunno:

how much have you been driving it. i also have a 2000 watt stereo system that probally sped up the process a little, but if its slowly starting to die its the alternator.

You are going to take the thing out anyway, I'd say try changine brushes first, they are only a couple of bucks and a few minutes with the soldering iron.  If you do go with a new alt, just remember that if you go with an aftermarket one, you will need to be real good at taking the alternator out and puting it back in.  Thats because you will change it alot.  Look at the above post, dude's on number 13!!  One time deal with a toyota alternator and you don't have to worry about changing the alternator 13 times.

Also keep in mind, if you are the type that likes mudding, mud can get inside the alt and push the brushes off the slip rings, and the alt won't work.  So keep it clean.  I watched my brother go through four pepboys alternators before he sprung for the toyota one and hasn't had a problem since.  On the other hand, he got real good at changing his alt.

takes me bout 15 mins to change my alternator without draining the radiator.   ive had 2 toyota alts  and i wasnt about to pay again so i decided to spring for a new one from kragen and if it died then id just take it back and get a new one..   Sofar  number 13  has been the ticket.  holding up to a ton of water and winching.

i run dual batteries (big CCA deep cycle ones)  so  if it goes out  i can run till a battery runs out and switch to the other.  i also have a spare ALT from a spare motor that i picked up that i sometimes carry if im going on a big trail and cant get back  to town easily.
