Is this my front seal leaking, 22RE.
« on: Mar 15, 2016, 06:39:13 PM »
Just want to make sure before I tear into it, is this where the front seal leaks?
Looks to be leaking on the back side of the oil pump, not from the front by the pulls. Thanks
In advance.

How many miles?

It starts at the front seal, and smears back with airflow.    I've never seen a leak at the oil pump to front cover.

Just pop off the front pulley.

The only seal worth a damn is the Toyota one (dealer)

Don't know how many miles as this is the 2nd time now. Last time I did it was probably 15yrs ago and don't recall
It leaking at the oil pump like it seems to be now. Guess either way it's got to get torn down, thanks for
The reply. The motor has 160k on it. I'm in the process of fixing all the leaking seals before summer.

If you're going to do the front main I'd do the oil pump as well. With Toyota seals.

Sorry, I meant the oil pump o ring between the oil pump and front main seal housing. I know it's rare to see them leak it seems but you're in there that far and it's not to much more for a Toyota one

Irs us ally not the seal, but a groove worn into the harmonic balancer itself, from the lip of the seal.

You can either get a sleeve and seal which has always worked for me  or a new harmonic balancer, or crankshaft pulley. Make sure the belt pattern matches your accessories if you do this.

I've replaced the seal a couple of times.

Never been a groove in the pulley.

The new design Toyota seals are thinner, so you can position the lip of the seal in a slightly different spot if there just happens to be a groove.

Part number 90311-45014 for the front main seal that you can put in different spots and part number 15188-38030 for the oil pump housing o ring. I bought those two for an 89 22re.

The front seal is really easy when the oil pump isn't attached to the front cover..........

I need to tear into mine too.  Been told that there is a Celica seal that is bigger.  I need to check my buddy to see what part number.  Also, I have been told to shave the inner part of the seal too.  This will help in getting it in a different location too.

I've done both, a thinner seal tapped just a hair further in than the original and I've also ran a sleeve. Both work fine.
