30-Spline Chromoly Rear Output Shaft question
« on: Jan 02, 2016, 10:42:48 PM »
I installed Marlin's 30-Spline Chromoly Rear Output Shaft and at the very end of the install I noticed the new output shaft is not bored for the speedometer detent ball.  The speedo will not work as the gear just spins on the shaft.  Has anyone else had this same problem?   I need to call them on Monday but to find out what is with this as for a street driven truck having the speedometer is a must and the item description does not say anything out it not working after the install.

Thanks.
John

OK so I spoke with the sales office earlier this week and was told they do not make the hole for the detent ball in the shaft because the speedo gear has it's diameter enlarged to fit the larger shaft.  That does not leave much of the cutout for the ball left in the gear.  I'm told that just friction from torquing the output flange nut is enough to hold it tight.

I have to finish reassembly this weekend.  Then it goes back in the truck which is under the knife for a front 3 link and 63 chevy's in the rear.  I spoke with one of the sales people at Marlin's and said he has this setup and his speedo works fine so I assume it will work.  I just explained it might be good to specify that you don't use the ball on the page or to have specific instructions for this that explains you don't need the ball.

Yes. Marlin Crawler has designed the 30 spline rear output not to have a detent ball because the bored out speedo gear has enough preload from the flange nut that it doesn't spin. I have built a couple and they work great. So much more heavy duty than a stock output!
