3.0 tire to gear questions
« on: Aug 23, 2015, 03:05:54 PM »
Ok so im in the process of building my 1st s.f.a.  and have most of it either figured out or planned. Except for my gears. I have a 90' extra cab Sr5. with factory 4.56 r&p.  I plan on running 35's but this will b more of a d.d. than dedicated trail rig. I already have an extra 4.10 set up in a 3rd. One set of 5.29's just sitting unistalled.  But dont know if 5.29 may be to much for a d.d. or should i go 4.88. I hear alot with the 22re but not so much for v6. Either way still need to buy one if not 2 sets.  Any info or thoughts would b great. Its mu last big issue holding up progress. THANKS

If you have a 5-spd, the 5,29's would be the correct choice of gears for 35's, if you have an auto, the 5.29's are your only choice.   35's are about 11.5% bigger than the 31's(oem tire package), the 4.88's are about 6.5% taller than the 4.56's, meanwhile the 5.29's are about 13.5% taller.  You would be under geared by about 5% with the 4.88's(think 5% loss in HP performance), while with the 35''s you would be 2% over geared(not sure if you would see it, maybe on the upshift between 3rd and 4th).  The 5% power loss would be fine if it was a dedicated trail rig, but as a DD the performance loss wouldn't be worth going with 4.88's.  I have ran a set of 35's on my '90 with 4.88's, and every hill I could climb with ease in 5th, I struggled with in 4th.

 thanks snowtoy appropriate the input.  And yes it is a 5spd.the 5.29's are what I had always planned on running but after talking with a few friends they looked at me like I had three heads when I said I was running them. And good looking truck a lot like mine.  Thanks

So I'm not crazy after years off planing 5.29`s it is so I only have to buy a rear set rather than 2 sets of 4.88`s. Thanks guys.
