Which 6x9 Speakers should I buy?
« on: Mar 28, 2005, 10:38:23 AM »
Welp now that I've got an alarm sys on my rig, it's time to get some tunes in there. I've got an older cd player from my MR2 that I'll use. It's been sitting in my room since Aug.

I don't want to run a sub right now (will do it in July) so I am looking for some good 6x9s. I've got a 300 watt amp and a small 80 watt amp that I got for free and have never used it.

So I want to get some speakers this week and install everything this weekend.

So what are some great speakers? Suggestions :_order:

I like the RoadMaster 6x9 200 watts ( $20 a pair at Wal-Mart ), they're red & black, har dto miss, and inexpensive enough that, if you break one, you can replace it for cheap.

All i knos is the sony xplods are crap :headshake:  my friend had two in his ricer, with a stock nissan stereo and he blew both of them, then sony wouldnt take them back, because he was listening to music the speakers werent designed for :headscratch:  His Blaupunkt (sp) orked much better, and the customer service was excellent, his little brother accidentally kicked the cover off, and bore the little tabs that held it on.  The company sent him a new speaker and told him to send them the old one, only thing he paid was shipping for it.

Alpine...5 years on their middle of the line 6X9's and they are still crystal...I run alpine 51/4's in my runner too, great speakers...as well as my 12 inch Type R sub and head unit...My little 4's in the front are by FOCAL, also a killer set of speakers.

I nice good mid price range would be a pioneer or kenwood 3 way 6x9.  Otherwise look at the MB Quarts, Raindbows, Diamonds and things like that. But if you think they are going to take alot of physical abuse get a set from best buy, circuit city or somewhere like that with there cheap extended warranty, it covers anything. years down the raod even I know. And if the don't make that model anymore the will get you into the new one

Thanks for the info. I kinda took a wal-mart approach with my sound sys in my MR2 (all hand-me-down parts that I traded labor for) and I never really liked how it sounded. So I thought I would be a bit more bold this time and dish out a hundred or so on some great speakers.

I'm gonna stop by the Good Guys next time I'm in the area (I've got some store credit there :eyebrow:) so I'll see what they have for some *slightly* high-range products.

Here's the radio I'm gonna use:

It's a Pioneer DEH-P5500MP. How will some 6x9 speakers sound if I just hook them directly up to my unit? Without an amp? The unit is rated as a mosfet 50watt x 5 channel, but I heard that it never gets that anyways. Plus the fact that I dont know crap about sound systems so thats why you are here to help me out

I have that small 80watt amp, should I use it? I think for right now I am only going to use two 6x9 installed in the front of the doors at the bottom. I'll get some tweaters later, but I am just gonna get something going for now - but I want to do it right ;)

BigMike-

Definitely go for a 3 way 6x9.  A decent set can be had for around $100 anywhere, just specify how you want them to mount.  Some are designed to be surface mounted from the "front" of a panel. (so the entire speaker ring sits in the passenger cabin of the car) Some are designed to be mounted from "behind" a panel (inside a door, in the trunk firing thru the rear dash on a hatchback)

I installed a nice set of surface mount 6x9's in the doors of my buddys 82 hilux, and they sounded great.  Just be sure to get some foam baffles to keep water and dirt off the backs of the cones if you mount them in the doors.  If you have room behind the seats, you can mount 'em in a set of those cheep boxes.

I'm a bit of an audiophile, and have put together a few systems in the past.  The setup in my Supra is pretty nice, my 12" sub shakes the neighborhood if I want it to...

Hey Mike I have some brand new pioneer 6x9's I can send your way, or if your going to the jambo in a few weeks and can give them to you there. They are 4 ways pretty I think top of the line, not really sure. Any speaker will sound better with an external amp, as long as its not rampage or some cheapo brand you should be fine. If you put them in a sealed enclosure they will sound much tighter and can handle higher volumes, door or free-air and you will need to turn the bass gain down a bit. Pm me if your interested, no charge since you guys at the shop have helped me out so much and all

They have grilles but I glued the things on   :smack:   since I could not mount em up the regular way since I pun them in my doors. But cosmetically they still look new and are not even broken in yet.     pics   http://www.crutchfield.com/S-bhZ3LU4lCOr/cgi-bin/ProdView.asp?g=52300&id=morephotos&pi=2&i=130TSA6980&display=XL#Tab

oh yeah, if you really want some good stuff, I highly recommend Focal. I believe they are manufactured in Switzerland or france?? Eiether way they are by far the best get-what-you-pay-for speaker. Do a few searches on forums etc and you will see the guys who love car audio more than we love yotas use focal, mb quart etc... but most prefer Focal since there not as harsh  at high volumes etc....
