I would say get another chain. Or go into a parts store ask to see one and measure the it. Might be a link short or something. What brand is it? Where did you get it?
If you see it, its for sale.

96 is the correct amount of links, 98 was the count for the earlier models.

Do you have the old sprockets?    Might be worn down enough to work.

What's the height difference between early and late heads?

I'm wondering if it's a early head that was machined with the pear ports so you think it's a late head.

Looking at your pic, I was always told to have thay little peg thing at the 11 o'clock position, you don't have it there

The timing set i have came with the rebuild kit I got from Dave Hyatt about 12 years ago, I did go down and buy a Cloyes brand and the chain and sprockets are the same size. I don't have the old chain or sprockets  because they were thrown out years ago when i put my truck into storage. The head i have is definitely a late model, the pic here is of early 22r head with different mounting points for the exhaust manifold.

Ok so I got an answer on my issue today James from Northside 4x4 came by my house this evening and we discovered that the head on my engine is about an 1/8" taller than other late model heads we tried a 98 link timing chain from an 84 and it's way to long.  :maddest:

no idea I'm going to pull the head and take it down to see if it can be shaved that far down without getting into interference territory. Unfortunately this has made it impossible for me to go wheeling this year so I may just hold out for doing a Chevy 4.3l swap since i recently acquired a 95 Astro van for free, and just get ready for next summer.
