1989 22RE #2 Cylinder no Compression
« on: Apr 28, 2015, 09:48:47 AM »
I just completed a compression test on my 22RE engine. I have had a rough idle, and suspected the #2 cylinder. Pulled the plugs, and all of them were normal, but the #2 plug was black and oily.
The compression test proved to pinpoint the problem with the #2 cylinder.

Compression Test Results:

#1 About 185 Psi
#2 About 10 Psi same result with oil in the cylinder. (10 psi)
#3 About 185 psi
#4 About 185 Psi

As far as I know this points to a problem with the valve. I am thinking maybe a stuck valve? I am looking into the cost of a rebuilt head. 22RE Performance has one for about 500 dollars. My goal is to be able to pass CA smog. Right now the truck is to high on hydrocarbons. Probably because of the #2 cylinder/Valve problem. I am going to pull the valve cover and check the valves, and conditions under the valve cover.

Any suggestions? :help:

Adjust the #2 intake and exhaust valves.

If the comp is still low, just pull the head, check the valves and have the head inspected/resurfaced, etc., and will be a lot cheaper than buying a new head.

You should do a leak down on #2 if you don't have access to a leak down tester you can rig one up with the hose from your compression tester. Bring the engine to TDC#2 pressurize the cylinder and see where the air is going. Pin the throttle plate open and disconnect the intake tube and remove the oil filler cap. Bad Intake valve is gonna leak air back thru the throttle body. Bad Exhaust valve is gonna leak right out the tail pipe. Bad rings or a melted piston is gonna leak up thru the oil filler cap. A Head gasket leak bad enough to bring a cylinder down to 10 psi should push coolant out of the radiator. There's a few other possibilities also like cracked or warped head, cracked block ect. but i think any of them are gonna get you down to 10 lbs. It needs to come apart regardless of what you find. Best of luck with your project.

make sure the valves on #2 are not too tight or bent and wont move.  pulling the valve cover will tell you a lot.
