Which pitman arm?
« on: Apr 05, 2015, 03:27:01 PM »
I need to order a pitman arm, but which one?  Here is why:

After speaking with Marlin, I bailed on the TG SAS 3 link 'C' kit and went with a Diamond.  This lead to much research in that you only receive the axle set up from FROR, not a problem. Marlin also suggested 4WU for the 3 link set-up, which I went with. Brian from FROR is really cool to deal with.  The axle is on it's way to 4WU.  There, another Brian (also cool) will remove all IFS stuff, install all brackets and other parts necessary to complete the build. So my question is:  Which pitman arm do I need to purchase from MC?

Parts I currently have:
Oil pan, sump, dipstick, steering linkage kit from Yodamasters
Re-built steering box and mounting hardware from MC
Howe Performance PS pump, pulley, in-line cooler & reservoir.  Howe re-worked parts of the steering box to accommodate AN fittings, beautiful TIG welds I might add.

I plan on ordering a drive shaft from MC when the build is close to completion.  Any suggestions on that?

Thanks.

Sounds like you did your home work and went with quality parts.

Personally I prefer a flay pitman are. You can run either, which 1 you run will depend on how you align/ angle your steering box during install.

I guess 4WU can identify which is needed when the box is installed.

Should ne nice when completed.

If you don't mind me asking what's the bil $ going to be on a job like this? The local shop here charges $140/hr for this kinda work, actually any fab work, it can add up really fast.

Check with builder, but I would make sure it matches the TRE's you have (or are having installed).

I'm guessing they will know what to do once they have it.
If I don't ask the stupid question, who will?

85 Runner, 22RE, AEM 'warm intake', TRD Cam, LC Headers, Dual Case, 5.29's, ARB Front Locker, Detroit Rear Locker, 35's, V6 Brakes, ARP Studs, Marlin Arms/Caps/Hy-Steer, Winch, Armor, Can-Back Top....and...

...more Gremlins than Gizmo the Mogwai was responsible for.

Yeah, I could do that too.
If it helps, I went with the complete Diamond assembly, high steer, high pinion and so on.

Dunno what the final cost is as I still need more parts.
Brian @ 4WU said OEM removal/ install was around 2.5k.

Thanks for the replies.

Thanks, the labor is all I was really curious about. As far as the pitman arm goes I think the installer will have to figure out where the steering  box will sit and decide on the correct arm from there.

Thanks for the info.  I did think of the box location being a factor.  I was hoping someone on here has the Diamond 3 link set up and would chime in.
Just trying to prepare as much as possible to save down time.

Thanks for the reply.

You will be happy with everything that you are doing.  That is an awesome setup.  Both Brians are helpful and knowledgeable.  Your pitman arm selection will have to do with frame height, up travel amount, panhard angle, front axle location, possible frame notching...
Basically, ask brian.  lol.  Keep us updated with the pictures.

Sounds good. I am going with the 12" CO's (Radflo) in hopes of keeping the frame height down.
Yeah, I can hardly wait.  This has been a long process but at the end of the day, worth the wait.

I hope to have pics of the process.  More to follow.

Thanks for the replies.
