3rd Members

I was wondering if all V6 third members look the same? I found a 3rd member that I was told is a V6, but it looks like a 4cyl. The only difference is that the carrier is wider.

Does this sound like a V6 3rd?

This is the one I found that is said to be a V6...





And this is my origonal one, notice how the  carrier is wider on the other one.

looks like a 4cyl to me.

carrier is not wider, ring gear is thinner.
the v-6 housings have more ribs on it and the carrier looks different.

So the difference in the carrier is just a different style of 4cyl. carrier?

Some of the earlier Turbo diffs had a housing with only three ribs on it, and supposedly came with a larger, 2 pinion open carrier. Is there any way you can check behind the carrier bearings to see if there are ribs cast into the housing? Something else you can do is feel the thickness of the housings themselves. The v6/turbo should have thicker steel for the diff. itself.

I know that there is supposed to be 4 on either side of the V6, I just thought that there might have been a chance that there was a version that it looked like a 4 cyl.

I was thinking maybe an older 4cyl. turbo or something.

There should be some ribs on the inside of the diff, behind the carrier bearings.

89 toy: There are certain early versions of the turbo/V6 diff, that only had three fins. There were something like 6 different castings for the v6/turbo diffs between 1985, and 1995.

So the rib should be... Ummm, what one is the carrier bearing, isn't there 2 of them? You not talking about the pinion bearings right?

Ya, sorry about that. Carrier bearings (plural). These are the bearings that sit on either side of the carrier, and inside the adjuster screws. Something else you can do, is get the bearing number off of the carrier bearings, and cross check them with v6, and 4cyl. bearing numbers. Something is bound to match up somewhere, and tell you what you've got.

What do you mean by 'behind' them? Like in between them. I'm not sure exactly where behind is.

I always though that the carrier bearings were the same in the V6 and the 4cyl. I might be wrong.
