I have a 1989 Toyota 22RE 4X4. I have been investing some time and money into tracking down and solving some oil leaks that have been present for a while. I have replaced the valve cover gasket, oil pump, water pump, timing chain guides (metal), timing chain cover, and the timing chain was replaced about 130 k mile ago.
These replacements have solved the majority of the oil leaks. There was only an occasional drip for several months after this work was done.
Recently I have noticed oil leaking out of the rear of the engine. Its hard to see exactly where it is coming from, because of the location being close to the fire wall. It is basically running down the sides of the transmission near the front, where it bolts on. I am going to tighten the valve cover, and I am trying to see if there is anything to tighten on the rear of the engine under the valve cover. Things seem to rattle loose after a while.

half moons seals on the front and back of the head, the rear one always leaks bad. did u replace them and if u did, did u use RTV sealant on the side mating to the head.

also dont over tighten the valve cover. i believe its only 10ft lbs. over tighten will flatten the gasket and possibly cause the rocker arms to hit the baffle in the inside cover.

Could be your rear main seal.  Similar leak on my 85.
Replaced rear main seal and oil pan seal.  Fixed the leak.

I had the rear main seal replaced, but it has been a long time between. It could be leaking again. The half moon in the front is nicely sealed, I had a shop do the work and they used RTV, I think the one in the back should be good. I would like to replace the oil pan seal. Is that a big job? I was reading in a manual that you have to disconnect steering linkage, and the crossmember must be removed. I think that it leaks a little too. I bet there is some nice sludge in there that I would like to clean out as well.

the oil pan seal leaking would not put oil on the top of the bellhousing. double check the half moon in the back. never take a shops word for it.

yes dropping the pan on a ifs toyota is a little hard to do but can be done without unbolting the ifs crossmember. dont use a cork gasket, they dont last long, RTV, or toyota FIPG.

I will check the rear moon seal closer. Right now just cleaning the oil that has leaked, and tracking down the source. To replace the rear half moon seal do you just need to take off the valve cover?
