As a heads up, there will also be a work party on Cadillac Hill Sept 18-20th.

On Friday, they will be doing mostly the prep work, but on Saturday they will be pouring concrete.  Cadillac Hill will have next to no passage on Saturday the 19th due to shoring up and stabilizing the hill.  Thanks in advance for your understanding and cooperation.

This should not effect anyone coming in via Loon or WWS, but if you plan on dropping in on Saturday from Tahoma, you will not be able to get by.

Sunday it should be clear for us to exit as normal.

Hey guys, just moved out to California from Louisiana for work and have been creepin in this event for a few months now. Finally got the green light from work that I'm off! I saw that online registration is closed, what's the best way to register now? Anything pertinent that I need to know before going? I've been trying to read up as much as I can but I don't want to miss any important info. Thanks guys

No worries. Lots of people come last minute without paying for the official registration. You will just have to pay to camp at the springs. You can still get normal raffle tickets at the event (just not grand prize) and have a great time. What day are you wanting to wheel in?

Can we still take our fire pits while camping on the trail? I looked and they are not giving out caning permits. But I remember these were allowed last year. I just need confirmation.

I would try and get up real early on Friday and head in right away. There is an unprecedented amount of rigs coming to the roundup as well as the normal flow and even a couple of work parties. We will be heading in from Loon around 10 AM on Thursday. See you at the springs. we will have a camp going. Come drop in.

This sounds like it'll be a parking lot.  All it takes is one rig blocking the trail and it'll be backed up.  When I was there in 07 we had a huge backup heading into the springs.  I think we counted something like 80 trucks just sitting bumper to bumper.  We camped at the Sluice Box, I think, and still ended up at the spring after dark.  Without traffic I think I could run the entire trail in a long day if I just kept moving.

I'd leave much earlier than 10 am.  If your core group is all there, don't wait.

We are going in on Thursday at 10 AM. Quite a different story then going in on Friday at that time. Most people can't go in on Thursday as they have to work.

I'm going in Thursday evening on the Tahoe side. I hope there's not much traffic  :crossed:

Slow5oh

So what side and when would be best for a first timer in an  80 series? Are there any groups of full size rigs going? We're leaving Moab today and starting to head that way so we can head in on Thursday or Friday.

HogCanyonHopper

Either side should be fine for those days. Tahoe side is shorter getting to the springs for the event

For the most authentic Rubicon experience you can go in from Wentworth springs, that's the "original" way in, but I recommend you go in from the Loon Lake trailhead. Coming from Utah you can take 80 and go through Georgetown (get gas!) to get to Loon Lake. That trailhead is the most popular. You'll get right into the action and you get to see the granite bowl from a great vantage point. In case you don't see any rigs to follow, look for the yellow reflectors glued to the ground and follow those plus the tire marks. A group of volunteers will probably be at the staging area below the dam handing out spill kits and trail maps. I like to set up camp on Friday night near the Little Sluice or Buck Island Lake then press on to the Rubicon Springs the next day, Sunday morning is the rat race up Cadillac Hill then I hit up the Burger Lounge in South Lake Tahoe.

Going in from the Tahoe side is considered the reverse way, you'll get to the Rubicon Springs campground in a few hours, but you'll miss out on pretty much the entire trail - if you choose to set up camp and go on from the springs you'll just being playing leap frog with on-coming rigs, it won't ruin anyone's day but for the distance you're driving you owe it to yourself to get the full experience.

Say hi if you see me!

Awesome, thanks for the tips. If you see a guy in a white 80 series who looks likes he's lost then flag him down because that will be me not knowing what the hell is going on

Is there a good campground near Tahoe that anyone can recommend? We brought a lot of stuff for our 36 day trip and I want to get the stuff off the roof that we wont need so it isn't so tippy on the trail.

I'll be sure to say hi if I see you.  :beerchug:

will.the.thrill

I got you.

That whole area is called Crystal Basin and you'll be coming in on Wentworth Springs Rd. from Georgetown. Here's a map so you can see all of them in that area: https://www.smud.org/assets/documents/pdf/Crystal-Basin-Brochure.pdf

You're best bet is the Loon Lake Campground, it has a fee so bring cash for the iron ranger. Airport Flat is a solid choice as well, no fee there.

We are heading in Wednesday @ 10am with a first timer from Tahoe side if anyone wants to young the nice slow ride in
