replacing a welded rear end
« on: Sep 16, 2014, 09:24:56 AM »
Apologies for the simple question, but I just don't have a complete understanding of how to properly fix a welded rear end. I recently acquired a 1980 pickup with a welded ifs rear, Spartan up front and 5.29s front and rear. I understand it can't be unwelded, but what exactly needs to be replaced for this project? Much appreciated guys.

The spider gears and most likely the carrier. The housing itself will be fine.

just buy a new third, same gears as front, if you want open rear just find used, in good shape third with correct gears, loosen the 4 bolts to pull axles. remove third, replace with new(used) third, slap axles back in, oh don't forget to drain gear oil before doing anything, when done but new oil in.

Will that require new ring and pinion as well? What's my most logical, economical plan of attack here? Again, excuse my ignorance, learning as quickly as I can

Yes, I'm referencing the ass end. Do you gentlemen have an opinion on the trail gear assembled third members? Or any recommendations?

Does anyone reputable offer assembled third member units or a comparable kit, or am I better off piecing it together?

lol I know marlin has what I'm looking for, the problem is I'm not sure what I need. Not sure if I'm understanding this correctly.. (I think) I know I'll need a new differential, but I'm not clear on whether or not I can reuse my current 5.29 r&p? I'm sure all this will make sense when it's sitting in front of me on the workbench, but I'm trying to mitigate my only vehicle's downtime. I would prefer to dump as little money into this project as possible, however, if it's going to be significantly simpler to put a preassembled third member in then so be it. Thanks for spelling this out for me, guys.

I know time is of all importance, but if you keep your eye open on the forum here you can find some dang good deals on diffs. Maybe even be able to trade straight across for an open carrier with 5:29s...

are u trying to stay locked in the rear or u want it open?

if open then just trade it to someone looking for a welded 3rd and they have an open 3rd. front and rear diffs are interchangeable if u didnt know.

dont get a TG diff too much $ for something u can find on craigslist . new MC or just get a used one.

u can always swap out the welded carrier for an open one too like out of a stock 4.10 diff which are everywhere for sale for cheap.

Yes looking to keep the rear locked, thinking about going with a grizzly locker. Simple solution for a simple problem?

The easiest thing to do would be to buy a new 3rd with the gears and locker you want, then sell your welded 3rd here or on craigslist.
