quick gear question.
« on: Mar 22, 2005, 11:24:41 PM »
I have an 86 Toyota 4x4 with 22r and 5 sp manual. I'm picking up a set of 32" tires tomorrow and found a good deal on a locked and geared rear with 4.88s. The truck is going to be mostly an offroad truck (faster desert stuff, with 4wd, so also trails) and occasionally drive on the street. Anyways, will I be OK with 32s and 4.88s or should I pass up the new rear end and just get 4.56s like I had planned? The rear is the deal I don't want to pass up, but I already committed to the tires with my friend so I gotta pick those up. Anyways, thanks in advance for any help!

no, but thats just my opinion. the money could be spent better else where. im running 35's right now and it's still a champ with the 4.10 gears. i ran 32's for about a year and it would have been pretty much pointless to change the gears. all you will really accomplish is losing your top end

Very good to know. I appreciate your input! I guess I should just get all the stuff done and then go from there rather than doing stuff like this without it even being finished. Thanks again.

if you can pick up that rear for cheap you should do it up and turn around and sell it on here for a few xtra bucks. if you dont mind me asking how much could you get it for. i know a few people have been looking for some gears lately

Well, its a TRD rear from a Taco with the e-locker with 4.88s for $600. Considering I actually sold a completely STOCK TRD rear 8 months ago for $600 this seems like a damn good deal. I really wasn't even looking for an e-locker rear, but this came up so I considered it. Its on the TTORA national board. Scroll down to the bottom where he updated his post.

I had 33"s with 4:10 and it was a little tough. It really depends upon the true size of the 32"'s that you are running. If you are needing the power I would go with the re-gear. 33's and 4:10's were fine until I needed to pass or really wanted to takeoff, '82 5spd 22r. Just my  :twocents:

That wouldn't happen here in Colorado with the altitude and the HP it sucks from the engines.  I've got 31's and 4.10 gears and steep mountain passes and trails kick my butt.  I couldn't imagine 35's  :shocking:

with my 32's i could cruise up a pretty steep hill at about 60-65 which to me is pretty good. i never had a problem passing or accelerating, even with 35's i can go about 45-50 up a hill. i have a 22re only upgrade is k&n intake. i just dont see any problem with 32's and 4.10

Doh! I should have added... I'm going to be running dual spares, cab and bed cage, and more than likely a fuel cell in the future (definitely by the end of the year). If thats the case should I step up to 4.56s?
