Base of gear shifters getting hot after 15 mins of drive time. 89 4runner 4 cly

hey folks new to crawler. would appreciate any help on this.
after about 15 mins of driving in 4/5th gear, the front part of center console, base of gear shifters (esp. 4wD one)
gets super hot. any ideas?? 89 4runner 4 cly w marlin transmission installed by previous owner bout 10 years ago...

^^  What JROCK said about the oil.  Mine T-case shifter did the same thing, did.
Turns out, the shop that rebuilt my A340F and installed the Inchworm 4.7 Lefty did not fill the TC with oil... none.  I noticed a slight growling resonating through the shifter, which is when I noticed the heat and decided to change the oil.  Pulled the plug and nada.

I filled it, drove it for a week and changed oil again, no shiny particles, thank GOD.  Filled it... heat is gone as is the growling noise.
