I have a W59 I took apart.  It was my first oppurtunity to look inside of a transmission and learn.

I'm ready to put back the two case halves togethor -  RTV right?

It never had a shifter and I used a metal punch to shift it between gears to check the shift fork movement.

Does it need to be in a certain gear when I close it up?  Any issues with installing a shifter afterwards?

If you're using the paper gaskets, I prefer smearing Hylomar on both sides of the gasket.

With no gaskets,   I'd use Hylomar or ultra grey or ultra black

No papaer gaskets.  So staight RTV.

Does it matter what position the shift rails are in when I close it.  I want the next person to be able to install a shifter w/o splitting the case open.

Put it in neutral so the shifter can be installed?  Does it matter?

I was probably in neutral when I put my W56B back together.....

:dunno:

Don't think it matters.

Just make sure you can get all the gears before the RTV dries.

I didn't put the shifter back on until it was installed
