22re Issues
« on: Feb 28, 2014, 11:06:31 AM »
My 89 toyota is hard to start in the cold, it runs good once its running but then run like junk once its warmed up. It just seems to start running rough like in the video below. If you let it sit and cool for a bit it runs great again for a bit then runs like junk. I did the head gaskets on it and replaced the fuel pump and filter at the same time. The truck ran great for 50km until this started to happen.

A picture of the beast.

Here is it starting in the shop, about 20*c.

I want to say my valve gap is off as I only did a cold set. Might check it when their warm.

the second video i was like....:yikes:

sounds horrible.

my advice is set the valve clearance at the correct intake at 0.08 and exhaust 0.012 warm for starters then work your way to the bigger stuff..
this could also be caused by a bad/clogged cold start injector. or thermo time start switch which is at the front of the intake manifold at the bottom, the connector should be a round black one, this sends the signal to the cold start injector that the motor is either cold or warm.
when it is running it sounds like it has a bad miss, try replacing to cap and rotor and plug wires with oem parts. check the plugs and re gap them if necessary or just replace them.

TIMING! setting the correct timing is key to make the 22re run correctly.set it with a light if u havent already and make sure your distributor/timing chain is not a tooth off and was set at TDC or top dead center.

lastly i would check that the injectors arnt bad or clogged. get them tested if u can.

also check your coil and ignitor

This isn't a constant problem. Its sporadic, other times the truck runs fine revs to 5500rpm. Stuff like timing, ignition system, injectors and stuff like that should be consistent. I'm leaning towards the short in the wiring. Theirs nothing consistent to make the truck run the way it does, run time, engine temp, ambient temp, rpm don't stay consistent when the problem arises. It mostly seems to happen after the truck gets driven. At first I thought is was junk in the tank getting picked up and fed through the engine. I drained the tank, ran cleaner through it and replace pump and filter. Truck worked for 50km after that then acted up the same again.

So I played around with it on the weekend. When ever it starts acting up if I shut it off and re start it the truck will run perfect. Then it will start running rough again.

I'm thinking electrical or something is getting picked up by the pump and is clogging it.

Here's when its runs good. Dosen't make sense that it would be timing or cap and rotor.

yea the motor sounds good in that last video.

must be a wiring/connections issue. start checking the voltage on things too.

I've wiggled, shook and sprayed water on dam near every connection i can get at, no change at all.

I've checked everything and only thing I've noticed is that the timing retards a lot when it idles rough. I put a new cap and rotor on because they were badly pitted. Haven't had time to play with it so don't know if it fixed the problem

After I did my swap it ran great but every once in awhile would run horribly. I shook all the wires to no availe. I finally found it 18 months latter after several episodes of untaping the main wiring harness and shaking all the connections. I found a plug with one terminal with light tension. I used a pick to spring it back to shape. I am also going to squirt dielectric grease into all of the engine bay connectors. It has been running perfectly for the last 9 months without any hicuups.
I would recommend using some dielectric grease on your connectors. That way if there is a loose connection it will probably solve it.
