Drive line noise with dual cases
« on: Dec 05, 2013, 10:44:59 PM »
Hi all,

Pete here from New Zealand. I have a double cab toyota pickup with dual cases and a marlin adaptor. I got the cases 2nd hand with the adaptor already fitted.

Went for a drive on the weekend for the first real time at highway speed and noticed some noise when at high speed and not under load. Ie no noise when accelerating or engine braking but coasting with with the clutch in or gbox in neutral i get what sounds like a bearing noise from the transfer.

Put the front case in neutral and noise is still there. put the rear case in neutral and the noise goes away.

After doing a search on here it looks like this could be my drive shaft and putting a double cardin joint on should help. However I have two questions.

1) does anyone run dual cases without the double cardin joint with success or is it a given that one will be needed?
2) If my noise is drive shaft and not transfer why would it go away when the rear case is put in neutral?

Cheers,
Pete

I had a noise that sounded like a bad bearing that got worse the faster I went and would go away when coasting or very light load. At 85 MPH I thought it was going to grenade.

I couldn't accept it was because I had a non CV driveshaft. My U-joints and drive shaft angles were all within acceptable limits. I had checked the oil and drain plug magnets for metal and found none. I was still convinced I had a bad bearing. I tore my trans and T-cases apart like a dumbass and found nothing wrong.

I finally had a CV drive shaft made, bought some new spring perches and rotated my rear axle for the correct drive shaft angle. No noises, no vibration, no problems.

^^^ Times three and make sure to reset your pinion angle.
