I am going to swap a 3rz swap into my '85 yota pickup. I want to buy a complete wrecked vehicle so I have all the stuff including wiring harness, computer, exhaust and etc. I need to know if the trans that came with the 3rz was better than  my stock 5 speed? Should I swap the new or leave my old trans in. There is nothing wrong with the old and I have the marlin clutch which works great. I have dual transfer cases with the forward shift.
Also, If I keep the old transmission, do I have to buy a different bell housing or will the 3rz bolt right up to my existing trans? Any info will be appreciated. Tom Burt.

If your truck came with a w56 tranny keep that and you will have to swap the bell-housing from the 3RZ. Or there is info on making a HD tranny. Just read up

Thanks! Next question is how do I know which tranny I have?

Go to mc store and click on transmissions. Scroll down and click on trans gear ratio chart. Scroll down and you will see a table that's what year of truck had what trans.

If your rig is 85 efi it should have a w56-a if it's carb chances are it's a G. W56-a top shift G series fwd shift

22RE's came with the W-tranny. 22RET had the R151,22r's had G's. My 87 runner has the w-style with a forward shift T-case bought a  :turtle: adaptor and found a top shift of a 1983 toyota with an L-style tranny. :turtlehead:

Are the W series transmissions better than G series?

Tungsten Slayer

I've used the G series before with no issues, but the W seems way more popular.  I have heard it is stronger or has better gear ratios, can't remember :hammerhead:

emsvitil

R's are stronger than W's which are stronger than G's

Also W's are stronger than L's

Not sure if L's are stronger than G's or if G's are stronger than L's........

I still need to know about the 5 speed that comes in a '95 to '04 Taco.  Is it any better than the w56 that is in my 85 22r? I plan to buy a wrecked Tacoma and stake everything needed to do the swap. I was wondering whether I should use the w56 or use the trans that comes in the Tacoma. Maybe I can't or shouldn't use the Tacoma trans. I don't know. Anybody know the answer.

HogCanyonHopper

the output on a W59 trans that comes in 95-05 Tacomas with 2/3RZ is 26 spline.

using the w-56 will save you from buying an adapter to run gear drive cases on the taco tranny...w-56 all the way...

Cheesemaker

Use the W series trans (or if you can get a R151F) because you are gonna need the passenger side drop transfercase.   Unless you get a custom front axle with the diff on the drivers side.
