Taco SAS dilemmas

My recent '00 SAS has the front shackle mounted to the bottom of the frame which = bad things. In order to get enought articulation out of my 14" bils and waggy leaves, I need a long shackle. That means one huge rock grabber and doesnt help with the pinion angle. It mounts right infront of the body mount where the frame curves out.

I am working with Deaver to get a custom length leaf pack, but I need to resolve this "hanging" issue first.
It appears that if I mount the shackle between the body mount supports as with MC pre-taco SAS kits, My front spring location would stick out pretty far from the front and would require the lower shock mount to be on top of the U-bolt flip plate (no more room for bump stops). The new location of the spring would also be directly under the steering arm. Its bad enough the crappy turning radius & rubbing i get now with 3.75" BS wheels, I was planning on 2", but pushing out the leaves even further  may make turning the rig like turning a bus.
I see alot of whoops on the way to the trails, and never have been too easy on the "skinny pedal". I am worried that the possibility of uncontrolled compression would damage my shiny shocks and become friendly with my steering components.

Are there any other recommendations to raise the shackle mount, other than notching the frame in a Ghetto-fabulous manner? Any idea if an offset shackle, boomerang style or straight shackle would be best to clear frame and/or body mount supports?

Thanks everyone,

Do you have any pics of your front shackles right now?

Since you probably don't want to modify the body mounts, it seems to me that your only alternative would be a boomerang style shackle, or kinda like a L bend shackle to some degree. Then you could run the longer spring pack without modifying your frame/body mounts. Also, you should really mount the shackles at mid frame height and run a longer shackle that rests at a more horizonital angle. If you raise the shackle up while increasing its length, then you can maintain the same ride height and pinion angle.

Pics!

Karnage,

Have you thought about 3 linking the front or some sort of radius arm set up with some coil springs? Seems like that might solve alot of the problems your having. Just my  :twocents: . I'm all about leaf springs for easability but sometimes they become more of a pain in the butt then a simple link set up...

Get with the pics so we can see what your working with! I love SAS Tacos!!!

Posting pic's would be a good idea. There are a lot of creative people on this site.

Im with Mike too on the coilovers and links. When I had my Taco I wanted to do the SAS but never liked the leaf setup sure its easy but I think more problems come from it. I know you really didnt have an opinon on the way it was set up (another whole story in itself), But it seems to me coilovers and links are the way to go. Do you think Jason would be willing to help you set up a setup like that. I like the way his turned out. I even like the way Dicks it set up there both good setups. Its good to see you wanting to get out side of the box and not stay in it with the rest of the leaf spring setups.

karnage

now look at you all did, now im just thinking links. Since Im such a perfectionist, id hate to chop up the frame for a nice leaf setup just to patch it and link it. Its a little out of my budget with all the cost of DOM, per DeMello its about $600 each side, not including the rod ends or the coilovers.

as for pictures, i dont have any of them on a website to attach to this post, but did was doing some hi-lift flex pulling my starter yesterday. What a mess!

Het Lyle I herd about the starter That really sucks. I know its been a week Ive been out of town working . Have you got it fixed yet?

karnage

nope not fixed yet, been playing the pricing game, than spent too much on a buddies birthday bash, now im waiting til next payday to order the flexplate and starter from Toyotapartsales.com to slap it in.

Still trying to decide whether to drop the tranny curb side or to have my local mechanic pick it up and do it in his shop. If I have him do it, im gonna have him tap in auto cooler lines and temp pickup for a later gauge.

once the POS is running, its going to DeMellos for surgery.
